I am so excited to share this with you... the 3D blog is LIVE!

I have been putting together a blog about 3D artwork, dimensional illustration, toys and sculpted stuff.. a wide variety of mediums and examples of work from different artists along with little interviews.

I haven’t found anything out there that focuses solely on dimensional work and I think it’d be a nice place to learn about how other artists in a similar field work, why they make dimensional stuff, etc. It was sad to see the Dimensional Salon come to an end. This might be a nice way to continue it and also for artists working in similar ways to connect with each other.

The blog is live today with the first post profiling Chris Walsh, a wonderful 3D artist based in the UK.

I am so sorry for the silence! I have been hard at work on several jobs. My newest and greatest news is my NEW WEBSITE! It has a blog built into it under 'news', so that is where I will be posting from now on. My site was designed by Creating Causes, whom I can't recommend enough! The sculpted illustration I made for the cover of Der Spiegel's new magazine for young readers, "Dein Spiegel", hit newsstands this week in Germany! It was an honor to work with Der Spiegel again. This scene depicts Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel struggling with Frank Steinmeier for the crown.

Celebrating 18 years of OASIS!

At first I was heartbroken by the OASIS break-up, then shocked (not really... who didn't see this coming?), then really happy for Noel Gallagher. I know he will go on to make amazing music. We decided to take Noel out for a swift pint at our local to help him celebrate his departure from the band. I would have liked to make it an all night affair but I am on some insane deadlines right now and hopefully when it's all through, I can do some real celebrating myself! WE LOVE YOU NOEL! Good move & well done!

I swear, I AM still here. Forgive me Father, it's been one month and one day since my last blog post! No, I have not been on holiday enjoying the summer. I've been hard at work on deadline after deadline. I've got some exciting projects that I'd love to share with you, but so far they are top secret and can't be revealed until they are out in print.
I CAN tell you about some exciting deliveries from Mr. Postman (or woman). A few weeks ago I received some samples of a polymer clay product called Bozzi from my 3D friends in Brazil! I am dying to get my hands into it and give you all a full report but I've not had a chance yet. I'll post about it when I do.
I also got the Lürzer's Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 09/10 and the Communication Arts 2009 Illustration Annual in the mail. Love them!

I can also tell you about the 3D blog I am putting together (it's taking a while because it's in my spare time- which right now doesn't exist). The address will be http://3dillustrations.blogspot.com and my aim is to showcase 3D illustrations and other sculpted stuff by a different artist each week (i hope?!) The whole point is to celebrate the medium and get more people excited about it! If you make dimensional work, please get in touch.

CowParade Carnival!

Yesterday was the CowParade Carnival in Flushing, Queens. It was a gorgeous day! So many wonderful people came to see the cows which were scattered throughout the Queens Crossing building and plaza. There was live music and games and then an opening reception for the '09 Oh Cow!' exhibit in the Crossing Art gallery. Thank you to all my friends and family who came.

a few months ago I was contacted by the wonderful people at Pollen to design these characters for a television commercial. The client is a law firm in South Africa called de Broglio Attorneys. I sent over my sketches and they were then rendered digitally, undergoing some necessary changes along the way. It's such a thrill to see them come to life in this wonderful TVC! Thank you Pollen!

The sculpture I made of my favorite actor, Steve Buscemi, was also selected for 3x3 Illustration Annual No. 6 AND for Communication Arts 2009 Illustration Annual. Go Steve!

These are just some of the photos from the last official day of the Open Studio (see all the photos here)... the last day of an incredible journey which began on May 9th through June 28th and transported me from Main Street, Dumbo to Main Street, Flushing. It introduced me to a new culture, new people, new art, and inspired me beyond words. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to work with such special people on such a fun project! I am looking forward to July 18th when the 'Unveiling of the Cows' will take place at Queen Crossing. I will post when I have more information- everyone is welcome to come!

On the 33rd day I coated the wings several times in 'interference' colors to give an iridescent look when the light hits them. I circled the cow doing touch-ups and tiny additions. I could hear the rain pelting down outside but luckily when I left to go home, it had stopped and the sky was filled with apocalypse mushroom puffs!

Day 32 was a complete roller coaster of emotions! I was trying to figure out what to do on Cowbella's forehead because I knew it needed some design element. I sketched out some ideas and Jun, my favourite photographer, picked the winning one.
I was happily working away but then heard some news that broke my heart... Christina (my little sidekick 'sister') would not be making the daily appearances at the mall anymore. Her mother sold the shop basically overnight, so there would be no more visits from Christina- I was gutted and worried that I'd never see her again. Then I got a text from Margot Miller, my source that keeps me informed of anything important now that we have no television, that Michael Jackson died and I was shocked!
At 7pm I wrapped up work at the mall for the night and headed over to Mudan for a wonderful evening of dancing and eating, meeting new wonderful people thanks to my host Qingyun. I left the party so happy but wondered how it's possible to feel so crushed and so elated in the space of the same day.

I dug up a couple of pieces I've been commissioned to make of Michael Jackson over the years. The first piece was for BET and was one of my very first jobs ever (I was still working with regular sculpey back then and painting with acrylic paints). The other two pieces focus on some of the strange stories that always surrounded MJ... one for MAD Magazine about America's best prisons (also featuring Martha Stewart, Kobe Bryant, Rush Limbaugh, and a few other celebs that got themselves into trouble) around the time of Michael's child sex abuse trial. The last was commissioned for a book shortly after the baby dangling incident. I think it's time for a new Jackson sculpture focusing on the good.
Rest in peace Michael. Thank you for the music! You will be missed.

Day 31 was all about building up layers of paste and filler to seal the gaps between the edge of the cow and the wings. Whilst those layers were drying I added glitter to the eyeshadow, the nostrils, added more lashes, and am trying to figure out what to do on the forehead! I will keep you posted. Thank you to everyone for all of your support through this wonderful project. I will be so sad to see it come to an end in about 4 days time!

On day 30 a lovely couple, Karen and Pohl, came by to see the progress on Cowbella and give me a little cow broach they had bought for me. Can you guess which cow it was? That's right, cow fans... Angelicow! And they bought it without realizing that I had made it! That really blew me away. It was another day of hard work- sorting out the wings and making sure they fit properly. It was great to see Leslie again too.

On the 29th day I carved bits of the wings off so they would sit flush on the cow, and I added more gems. I had another visit from Ginger! She was excited to see my Angelicow lamp... I was too actually. That was the first time I had ever seen one in person.
There was a "health care" seminar in the mall which gave away free Cotton Candy- yikes!!! Christina and Wendy were happy about that. You can see more photos here.

Open Studio- the final days...

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday (June 26, 27, 28) are the final days of the Open Studio in the Flushing Mall, where we've been working on our cows for the Flushing CowParade. Come see us! We're there all day from 11am - 7pm.

Day 28 was so exciting! It started with a visit from Jun Liu who posed for a photo with Cowbella...

more gems were added to the shapes on Cowbella...

I got to sneak a peak at an enormous painting that Wei Kang had done whilst he was in NY...

Peiliang Jin, the lovely and amazingly talented landscape artist working next to me, pulled off layers of tape from his cow (I snapped this as he pulled off the last 2") revealing perfect lines of colour...

and Chick Lam of "Flowers on Stage" fame (which has the most gorgeous flowers and plants and is like an oasis in the mall) was excited about his special delivery from Hawaii- Hawaiian Volcano Plants!

Today brought a special surprise... two lovely people who came all the way from Florida to see the Flushing CowParade! Mary and Tony have been following CowParade since the beginning and have been to 17 different CowParades! It was such a pleasure to meet them and to share in their enthusiasm. I was happy to hear they had an Angelicow figurine. They were excited about Cowbella so perhaps she'll make her way into their collection some day.

After all that excitement I worked on painting the wings. I am getting there- slowly but surely (as my dad would say).

I worked from home on the wings which are made from Owens Corning insulation foam- that is carved, sanded and covered in joint compound which is then sanded again when dry.

Day 20 was bittersweet for me. I had a wonderful visit from my precious friend Butters (who's real name is Ginger) and her crew, got more detail painted on side B of Cowbella, but sadly it was Wei Kang's last day in NY. I was so happy to have worked next to him on this project and to have met someone who's inspired me so much. I feel a renewed excitement to create and am so grateful to have made such a special friend.

Today was so special! I met up with two of my ridiculously talented friends to see the Francis Bacon exhibit at the Met. Michael De Brito who was once one of my students at Parsons and Bob Levering who was once my painting teacher when I was a student at Parsons. The work was SO inspiring and the company was the absolute best!!! Go see this show if you can.

Wei Kang

One of the wonderful things about creating a cow for the Flushing CowParade has been meeting new artists. I have the honor of working right next to Wei Kang, an incredible artist from Shanghai. When we're alone we communicate through hand gestures and drawings. He brings me new food to try and I reciprocate with coffees and cookies- but it just doesn't compare. Yesterday, Wei brought me to tears when he gave me two of his books which he had signed for me and a drawing he did of me from memory. He also gave me a little hand carved bead. His work is so beautiful and is all painted with a tool he invented himself and has patented called the Rubber Pen. He had been painting on location and not had anywhere to clean his brushes. He attached rubber to the end of one of his brushes and the Rubber Pen was born. The photos posted here are just photographs from the books he gave me... you can see better examples of his work here. I am so grateful and humbled to know Wei Kang!

Happy Birthday to the sensational and always inspirational Margot Miller! It's hard to put into words what this little lady means to me (especially when I am this tired) but suffice it to say it's a TON! Besides being one of my dearest, closest friends, she's the creative genius behind my most treasured possession... the Hope Yoga Bag which she made using Swarovski crystals and was for sale on ebay. I bid like crazy on it, didn't get it, and when she found out how badly i wanted it... she made me one!

Yesterday was day 6 of working on Cowbella and I had a special visitor to cheer me on... my sister Charlotte! I've made some good progress: both sides of the cow have their shapes attached and I am nearly finished filling in the gaps between the shapes and the surface of the cow. I can't wait to start painting!

Flushing CowParade update

The Flushing CowParade

I was invited to make a cow for the Flushing CowParade, an event to further celebrate the Year of the Ox. My cow is called "Cowbella" and she's a cousin of Angelicow who I made back in 2000. Today was the first day of the open studio in the Flushing Mall in Queens and it was wonderful! I met so many people and made a million new little friends. I even had some helpers! Today I painted the cow pink and carved out the shapes that I will adhere to her surface. Tomorrow it's back to the mall to continue the work. If anyone is in the Flushing area and feels like stopping by, please do! I will update my progress each day that I work. Enjoy!

Octo-Mom!

Fresh off the press and on newsstands right now is the historical 500th edition of MAD magazine! It's packed with hilarious stuff from so many legendary writers and artists. I am honored to be a part of it!

My assignment was to sculpt Octo-Mom (aka Nadya Suleman) and I wondered if I'd make it through the job without being sick. I thought I'd finally have some use for these little plastic babies I've had lying around for years but they weren't needed in the end. Instead, I sculpted little hands and feet out of Super Sculpey, then baked them and pressed them into the giant belly made from a ball of tinfoil covered with Sculpey. I layered thin sheets of Sculpey over the hands and feet to give the 'about to burst' look. I baked her and painted her with oils.

Paul Weller

tonight we would have been going to see my favourite musician of all time, the legendary Paul Weller, play a gig at the Nokia Theater in Times Square.

Sadly his father and former manager, John Weller, was in ill health so the gig was canceled. John has since passed away. You can read many lovely tributes here:

New Jersey City University Workshop

It's been two days and I think I'm only just starting to recover from the amazing workshop at NJCU! It was an honor to be invited to such a wonderful University to share my process and help guide students through making a sculpted piece. These guys were the greatest group to work with! So enthusiastic and talented. Hopefully they will continue the work we started in the workshop and when they send me pictures of their finished sculptures, I will post them up here... so watch this space!

Israel C. Evans asked some great questions last week which I’ve been looking forward to answering (sorry for the delay Israel! I’ve been on deadline) Could you tell us a bit about the paints you use and your painting technique? I always paint faces with oil paints and usually paint bodies and clothing with acrylic.
Do you thin your paints much, and if so, with what? Yes, I thin the oil paint with Gamsol mineral spirits and do use quite a lot of it. I like how forgiving oils are- if I make a mistake I can wipe it right off!
Do you find your paints dry quickly enough for you, or do they remain tacky for some time? Even though most of the pieces are painted with oil, the speed with which they dry is never an issue because I am only photographing them. If it’s a private commission or a cake topper then I make sure I’ve allowed the necessary drying time before handing over the sculpture.
Do you cook your sculpey before you paint? Yes! But I don’t follow the directions on the box. Ovens vary so much that it’s trial and error to find the right temperature and time to bake Sculpey. I set my oven to 250F and the time will depend on the thickness of the piece. I usually will bake it in stages... it’s easier to bake it some more if it’s not fully cured, but once you’ve burned it you can’t go back!
Do you keep your creations around after you've photographed and photoshopped them? If so, do you have a giant warehouse in the works? I used to keep them around until they started to take over (they were everywhere!) When I moved from my old apartment I wanted to start fresh with no sculptures around so I put them in storage. After about a year or so of that I took them out and got rid of most of them. I don’t feel a need to hang onto them so if they are not purchased right after they are made then they sit around for a while. Maybe twice a year I’ll go through them and decide what to give away and what to smash with a hammer. Thanks so much for your questions! I hope these answers will help you.

Sheffield Hallam University's Contemporary Fine Art students have their final year degree show coming up in May. As part of the fundraising for the show, the Fundraising Team invited me to draw on a plain T-shirt, which will be auctioned to the public.

I started drawing with not much of a plan... and this was the result. (I got my husband to kindly model it for me to show it's cool for guys too!) Hopefully it will help raise some dough for them! The auction will be held in England at the University with a possibility of bids being accepted by email for those who cannot attend. I will keep you posted!

Noel celebrates 10,000!!!

Our Noel Gallagher video has now been watched 10,000 times! To celebrate we took Noel outside in the back garden for some fresh air.

It was a very short photo shoot due to the arctic blast that hit us when we walked out the door.

Here's an update of the piece I am currently working on. It's about low income families that sometimes have to choose between heating their homes or feeding themselves. This little old lady is standing in her kitchen getting heat from her oven (note the empty shelves). She'll have a coat and earmuffs on... brrrrr.

Forgive me friends, it's been over 2 weeks since my last post! First I want to thank everyone for watching the Noel Gallagher video we made and for all your wonderful emails and comments. It's been seen nearly 10,000 times! The Wall Street Bailout... a 'how to' guide

This 3D Illustration I did for the Wall Street Journal was so much fun I thought I'd share a little of the process!
I began with a sketch which was approved by my favorite art directors and editors at The Journal (with a few tiny changes which were to be made in the sculpting phase).

Then I started the figures with a wire armature, packed tinfoil on top to build up mass and rendered their likenesses in Super Sculpey using clay shapers.

I constructed the sinking boat out of Insulation foam and used the same material for the base. I used blue reflective paper for the water rising in the boat and layered globs of joint compound outside the boat to make the choppy waves. Once dried I painted the waves with acrylics.

I baked the figures in a toaster oven for about 15 minutes and painted them with oil paint after they had cooled.

Once painted, I placed the figures back into the scene and photographed them digitally. I shot a few of them separately and then manipulated the final image in Photoshop.

Design Week Interview

Anna Richardson of Design Week in London recently contacted me for some thoughts on 3D Illustration for a feature she was writing. I've posted below what I had to say but please read the rest of the article. She interviewed three other amazing 3D artists (two whom I know personally and who's work I love, and one newer artist) and you'll want to check out their work and hear what they say!

New York-based Liz Lomax calls herself an illustrator who works three-dimensionally and always begins projects with a sketch, before sculpting the figurines and environments. Most of her work is for advertising, such as a recent MasterCard 'priceless' campaign, and Lomax believes the medium is becoming more widely accepted, thanks not only to more art directors taking a chance, but also to technological developments. Digital photography, for example, allows her to shave time off the creative process. She also puts the appeal of her work down to the connection the viewer might feel with it. 'Most of us have played with Play-Doh or Plasticine at some point,' she explains, 'There's something about it we can all identify with.'

The story of Angelicow

During a recent assignment designing cows for a Hong Kong 'Year of the Ox' event, I had flashbacks to my CowParade days and thought I’d reminisce a little. It was sometime in 2000 when I heard about a public art project involving life-sized cows. I decided to enter and when asked to submit a sketch of my design showing how I would decorate a cow, I decided to sculpt this little model instead which I thought would more accurately display the sculptural elements I intended to apply to cow.

My concept was simply the style in which I draw my characters. I love the addition of angel wings, glitter, and rhinestones to just about anything. It’s also intuitive for me to make things feminine with large closed eyes smothered with blue eye shadow, long eyelashes and lips made up with lipstick.

I submitted a photo of my model which was presented to a board of potential sponsors ranging from large corporations to small business owners. My design was selected to be sponsored by Deiner Mt. Pleasant Associates who own a shopping mall in West Orange, NJ. They wanted to have my cow stand outside their florist shop. I received the exciting news that my design was selected and went to pick up my blank life-sized cow. I roped her to the back of a flatbed truck and drove her home to begin what would be one of the most rewarding projects I have ever done.

I began by painting the cow in a layer of orange house paint. Then I carved whimsical shapes out of insulation foam, sanded them to smooth, covered them in joint compound and sanded again when dry. They were covered in gesso and attached to the cow with strong adhesive. I used a caulking gun to fill in the areas where the shapes were not flush with the surface of the cow.

The shapes consisted of elements from my sketchbooks. These are shapes I constantly draw because they are aesthetically pleasing to me. Without being conscious of what I am making, I often draw stars- some with round edges which turn into clover-like shapes, and circles that extend into ovals. The layering of these shapes that move in opposing directions make the surface active.
The wings are also made of insulation foam. I glued several layers of it together to achieve the width and carved the wing shape. I repeated the sanding and joint compound process and hollowed out a tunnel inside each wing for a wooden dowel to slide into. The dowel served as an armature that extended down deep into the opposing leg through holes I had drilled on each side of the cow.

I painted the shapes with Acrylic paint and added rhinestones and glitter. I named her “Cold Cut”. I thought it was humorous in its contradiction. Here was this cow elevated to an angelic status, bejeweled and decorated in bright, happy colors but the name drew the focus back to a potentially sad fate. My sponsor found the name “Angelicow” to be more appropriate... and so she was called.

Angelicow spent part of the summer in West Orange and was then transferred to Newark Airport. She stood in the Continental Airlines Terminal beckoning passersby to the charity auction.

She was made into miniature figurines, magnets, lamps, jewelry boxes and just about anything else you can think of.

She caught the eye of Ringo Starr who bought her at the auction. I was able to meet him so I made a little sculpture of Ringo, bought one of the Angelicow replica figurines to put in the scene and presented Ringo with a print of the 3D illustration. It was such a wonderful experience that has led to so many other incredible opportunities that I am very grateful for!

A Grand Day Out

Check out the sinking economy on page R-9, the special "Year-End Review of Markets & Finance" where I got to sculpt some of the major players in the year of bailouts: the Federal Reserve's Ben Bernanke, President Bush ceding the wheel to Barack Obama, Lehman's Richard Fuld overboard, Treasury's Henry Paulson, AIG's Hank Greenburg, Citigroup's Vikram Pandit and in the center, GM's Rick Wagoner. I created these sculptures around the clock during the holiday season madness for one of my favourite art directors. Thank you Matthew for another exciting assignment!

One week ago today (I would have posted this sooner but I've been covered in Sculpey) we went with the fabulous Amy Grant http://thetumbleweedstudio.com/ (my former Parsons student, turned assistant and now... amazing friend!) to visit the studio of two other of my former students- the ridiculously talented David Bell http://www.davidbellstudio.com/ and Joe Scarpulla.

They showed us the incredible sets and figures they've built for their stop motion film. We even got to see some of the footage which blew us all away! What a HUGE treat we're in for when this film is finished. Personally, I cannot wait!

These guys make me feel like anything is possible. They taught themselves how to build armatures for stop motion, how to make molds, what equipment to use in terms of cameras and lighting, the programs, the list goes on.... So inspiring! Thanks guys!
